You Might Be Reading A Straw Man Argument If:
Tis the season for elections and gorilla assasinations. People are suddenly vocal about feelings, mostly on Facebook and blogs. It is also a time of sharing articles that describe how you feel about issues. I love that Facebook and blogs let people connect, debate, and share ideas. I don't love that those same tools can alienate and insult your loved ones. So before you click "Share" and type, "YESSS THIS!!!!" or "I'm just going to leave this here..." ask yourself: Is this a straw man argument? A simple definition of a straw man comes from Wikipedia : "A straw man is a common form of argument and is an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not advanced by that opponent." A simpler definition comes from me: "A straw man is an argument that attacks ideas that you claim your opponent has, but actually...they don't think those things at all...
Sideboard Refinishing
I keep telling people how excited I am about this sideboard, and everyone says something like, "Cyborg?" It is a real thing ok? Traditionally sideboards are used for serving food in a main living area of the house, not the kitchen, but I wanted one for storing all of our electronics. I found mine in the thrift store for $35. I fell in love with it right away, but it wasn't perfect yet. I carefully cleaned all the surfaces, firstly to prepare it for refinishing, and secondly because it came from a thrift store, so who knows where it has been. Gross. Then I took off all the hardware, including the cabinet doors. Then I wiped on two coats of my favorite Gerneral Finishes Gel Stain , the color I used was "Java". I really love that stuff. Everything it touches becomes pretty. Also it is dark and thick so you don't have to sand down to the bare wood if you don't want to, and I never want to. I also sealed it with two coats of poly urethane, and put on some...

The powers of Saruman cannot stop the Jimmer!
ReplyDeleteHee hee my favorite is the cheerleader who is cracking up while Magnusson gets possessed.
ReplyDeletePossessed? What kind of demon game is this "Basketball"?
ReplyDeleteIt took me 3 readings of your comic to figure out: A) What it was about; B)Who Saruman was helping; and I am only assuming that C) BYU won, because Gandalf was laughing.
Did he make that shot? The implication is that he did, or that he at least avoided [whatever bad thing happens when you fall/drop the ball/have your teammate trip on you/whatever was happening in that picture] which led somehow to the [game/world/middlearth] being won? Unless Saruman has something out for this Jimmer character. That would be interesting. So many possibilities! None of them actually have to include much basketball at all! Win-win.
Sonya what are you talking about? This comic is about existentialism and rugby...I'm not really sure where you got all those other ideas.
